Dr. Janicke Syltern (Neonatologist, Norway)
Dr. Janicke Marita Syltern is a neonatologist at St Olav’s Hospital, Trondheim University Hospital in Norway and a PhD student at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where her research focuses on the outcomes of perinatal asphyxia. She has a particular interest in medical ethics and has completed a 9-months certificate program in Pediatric Bioethics at the Children’s Mercy Center for Bioethics, Kansas, US (2015). Janicke is part of a research group looking into the ethical dilemmas in decision making at the border of viability, specifically focusing on the parental role. Since September 2018, she has chaired the Clinical Ethics Committee at at Olav’s Hospital. She studied medicine at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (MD 1998) and did her paediatric training at the Maternal and Children’s University Hospital in the Canary Islands, Spain. In her clinical work, she also focuses on paediatric and perinatal palliative care, and the importance of multi professional teamwork to support patients and their families.
